CTC vs in-hand salary for freshers, explained with an example

Quick answer
CTC (cost to company) is everything a company spends on you in a year, including things you don't receive every month, like the employer's PF contribution, gratuity, insurance and variable pay. Your in-hand (take-home) salary is your monthly gross salary minus your own PF contribution, professional tax and income tax. For many fresher offers, monthly in-hand pay works out to roughly 75–90% of CTC divided by 12, depending on how much of the CTC is variable pay and benefits.
Your offer letter says ₹6 LPA. You divide by 12 and expect ₹50,000 a month. Then your first salary arrives and it's closer to ₹38,000. Nothing went wrong: the offer was in CTC, and CTC isn't what you take home.
Here's how to read an offer properly before you accept it.
What is CTC?
CTC (cost to company) is the total amount a company spends on employing you for a year. It usually includes:
- Fixed salary: basic pay, HRA (house rent allowance), special allowance and other allowances.
- Employer's PF contribution: 12% of your basic pay goes to your provident fund account. It's your money, but you don't get it monthly.
- Gratuity: usually about 4.81% of basic is counted in CTC. You receive gratuity only if you stay at least 5 years.
- Variable pay / performance bonus: paid quarterly or yearly, and only if targets are met.
- One-time payments: joining bonus, relocation allowance (some companies include these in first-year CTC).
- Benefits: health insurance premium, meal cards, and similar.
LPA simply means "lakhs per annum": ₹6 LPA = ₹6,00,000 CTC a year.
What is in-hand salary?
In-hand (take-home) salary is what reaches your bank account each month:
In-hand = Monthly gross salary − Employee PF − Professional tax − Income tax (TDS)
- Employee PF: 12% of basic pay is deducted from your salary (in addition to the employer's 12%). Many companies calculate PF on a basic of up to ₹15,000, which caps it at ₹1,800 a month.
- Professional tax: a state tax of up to ₹2,500 a year, depending on your state (for example ₹200 a month in Karnataka and Maharashtra above certain salaries). Some states, like Delhi, don't charge it.
- Income tax: under the new tax regime announced in Budget 2025, salaried people with total income up to ₹12.75 lakh (₹12 lakh plus the ₹75,000 standard deduction) pay no income tax. Most fresher packages fall below this, so many freshers pay no income tax. Check the slabs for the current financial year.
Worked example: ₹6 LPA offer
Assume this common structure: basic = 40% of CTC, 10% variable pay, ₹10,000 health insurance, PF on full basic.
| Component | Yearly | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| CTC | ₹6,00,000 | |
| Variable pay (10%, paid later if targets are met) | − ₹60,000 | |
| Employer PF (12% of basic ₹2,40,000) | − ₹28,800 | |
| Gratuity (4.81% of basic) | − ₹11,544 | |
| Health insurance premium | − ₹10,000 | |
| Gross fixed salary | ₹4,89,656 | ≈ ₹40,805 |
| Employee PF (12% of basic ₹20,000) | − ₹2,400 | |
| Professional tax | − ₹200 | |
| Income tax (new regime, income below ₹12.75 lakh) | ₹0 | |
| In-hand salary | ≈ ₹38,200 |
So a ₹6 LPA offer gives about ₹38,000 a month in hand, plus up to ₹60,000 variable pay during the year. Your PF (both shares, ₹4,800 a month here) is savings in your name, not lost money.
Tip: If PF is capped at a ₹15,000 basic, employee PF drops to ₹1,800 a month and your in-hand goes up by ₹600, but your savings go down by the same.
Quick estimate: in-hand from CTC
These are rough monthly figures for freshers: basic at 40% of CTC, PF on full basic, no income tax. The lower number assumes 10% variable pay (paid later) and an insurance premium inside the CTC; the higher one assumes neither. Your offer can differ, especially if it has a large variable or bonus component.
| CTC | Approx. monthly in-hand |
|---|---|
| ₹3 LPA | ₹20,000–23,000 |
| ₹4 LPA | ₹26,000–30,000 |
| ₹5 LPA | ₹32,000–37,000 |
| ₹6 LPA | ₹38,000–44,000 |
| ₹8 LPA | ₹51,000–58,000 |
| ₹10 LPA | ₹64,000–72,000 |
Questions to ask before you accept an offer
- What is the fixed salary and what is variable? And how is variable pay decided?
- Is the joining bonus part of CTC? Does it have to be returned if you leave early?
- What is the monthly gross and in-hand? Ask HR for the salary breakup (annexure).
- Is there a service bond or training bond? How long, and what's the penalty?
- What is the notice period? Freshers often have 1–3 months.
- When is the first appraisal?
It's completely normal to ask HR for the CTC breakup; good companies share it in the offer letter.
How to answer "What are your salary expectations?"
As a fresher, research the usual range for the role and city first. Then:
- If the company has a fixed fresher package: "I'm comfortable with your standard package for this role."
- If they ask for a number: give a range in CTC, based on research. "Based on what I've seen for similar roles in Pune, I'm expecting ₹4–5 LPA, but the learning in this role matters most to me."

Frequently asked questions
How much is the in-hand salary for 3.5 LPA?
With a typical structure and no income tax, a ₹3.5 LPA CTC gives roughly ₹23,000–26,000 a month in hand. The exact figure depends on the PF calculation, variable pay and benefits included in the CTC.
Is PF included in CTC?
Usually yes. The employer's 12% PF contribution is part of CTC, and your own 12% is deducted from your monthly salary. Both go into your EPF account, which you can withdraw under EPFO rules.
Is gratuity paid to freshers?
Gratuity is paid only when you leave after at least 5 years of continuous service with the same employer. If it's included in your CTC, you won't receive that amount if you leave earlier.
Do freshers pay income tax?
Under the new tax regime from Budget 2025, salaried employees with income up to ₹12.75 lakh a year (after the ₹75,000 standard deduction and the rebate) pay no income tax, which covers most fresher salaries. Always check the current year's rules.
What is the difference between gross salary and CTC?
Gross salary is your total salary before deductions like employee PF and taxes. CTC is gross salary plus the employer's PF contribution, gratuity, insurance, variable pay and any other costs the company counts for you.
