15 HR interview questions and answers for freshers (2026)

6 min readBy the HireSol Careers TeamUpdated

Quick answer

The most common HR questions for freshers are "Tell me about yourself", "Why should we hire you?", "What are your strengths and weaknesses?", "Why do you want to join us?", "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?", "What are your salary expectations?" and "Are you willing to relocate?". Answer each with a short, honest point backed by one real example from your projects, internship or college life.

The HR round checks three things: will you communicate well, will you fit the team, and will you stay. It's rarely about trick questions. Prepare honest answers with one real example each, and you'll stand out from freshers who give the same memorised lines.

How to answer any HR question

Use Point → Example → Link:

  1. Point: answer the question directly in one sentence.
  2. Example: one real situation from a project, internship, college role or part-time job.
  3. Link: connect it to the job you're interviewing for.

The 15 questions

1. Tell me about yourself

Cover who you are, your best proof, why this role, and a closing line, in 60–90 seconds. We've written a full guide with 5 sample answers: "Tell me about yourself" for freshers.

2. Why should we hire you?

Match your strengths to their needs. "You need someone who can pick up your stack quickly and ship. In my internship I learned Next.js in two weeks and shipped three features to production. I'd bring the same speed here, and I'm comfortable asking for feedback early."

3. What are your strengths?

Pick 2 strengths relevant to the role and prove each. "I'm persistent and organised. For our college fest I tracked 60 sponsor leads in a sheet and followed up until we closed 14, a record for our college."

4. What is your greatest weakness?

Choose a real but non-critical weakness and show what you're doing about it. "I used to hesitate to speak in large groups. I joined our college debate club and now present in class every week. I'm much more confident, though I still prepare more than others before big presentations." Avoid fake weaknesses like "I'm a perfectionist".

5. Why do you want to join our company?

Show you researched them: their product, customers, growth, values or the role's learning. "Your platform is used by over a thousand small retailers, and I want my first job to be on a product with real users. I also read that new joiners rotate across teams in the first six months, which is the kind of learning I'm looking for."

6. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Show ambition that fits the company. "I'd like to be a strong full-stack engineer who owns features end to end, and to be mentoring new joiners. I'd like to grow into that here."

7. What are your salary expectations?

For freshers with a fixed salary, say you're comfortable with the company's standard fresher package. If asked for a number, give a researched range. "I understand the range for this role is around ₹4–5 LPA. I'm comfortable within that; learning and the role matter more to me at this stage." Learn the difference between CTC and take-home first: CTC vs in-hand salary.

8. Are you willing to relocate?

Answer honestly. If yes: "Yes, I'm open to relocating. I've lived in a hostel for four years, so I'm comfortable settling in a new city." If you have a constraint, say it clearly now rather than after the offer.

9. Are you comfortable with night shifts or rotational shifts?

Again, be honest. If the role requires it and you can do it, say yes and mention anything that shows you can manage it.

10. Tell me about a challenge you faced and how you handled it

Use STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result. "In our final-year project, a teammate dropped out two weeks before submission (S). I had to cover the backend (T). I split the remaining work into daily tasks, learned the parts I didn't know from the docs and pair-programmed with another teammate at night (A). We submitted on time and got an A (R)."

11. Tell me about a time you worked in a team

Pick an example where you contributed something specific, not just "we all worked together". Mention a disagreement and how it was resolved if you can.

12. Why did you choose this field / degree?

Give a genuine reason and connect it to the job. It's fine if you discovered your interest later; say what you did about it.

13. Do you have any other offers?

Be honest without bargaining aggressively. "I'm in the final round with one other company, but this role is my first preference because…"

14. Are you planning higher studies?

Companies worry you'll leave in a year. If you're unsure, say you want to build work experience first. Don't lie if you've already applied for an MBA or MS; you may be asked again later.

15. Do you have any questions for us?

Always ask 1–2. Good ones:

  • "What does a successful first six months look like in this role?"
  • "How is training or onboarding done for freshers?"
  • "What do people who do well in this team have in common?"

Avoid asking about leave or salary first in this question.

Body language and basics

  • Join video interviews 5 minutes early with your camera on, good light and a quiet room.
  • Sit straight, look at the camera when speaking, and smile when you greet.
  • Pause before answering hard questions. A 2-second pause looks thoughtful, not slow.
  • Keep a copy of your resume and the job description open.

Tip: After the interview, send a short thank-you message or email within 24 hours. Very few freshers do it, and it's remembered.

Frequently asked questions

What is asked in an HR interview for freshers?

Usually your introduction, strengths and weaknesses, why you want the job and the company, career goals, salary expectations, relocation and shift flexibility, plus one or two situation questions about teamwork or challenges.

How do I prepare for an HR interview in one day?

Write answers to the 15 common questions using one real example each, research the company for 30 minutes, practise your introduction out loud five times, and prepare two questions to ask the interviewer.

Is the HR round an elimination round?

Often, yes. The HR round can reject candidates who communicate poorly, seem unlikely to stay, or can't accept the location, shift or bond. Treat it as seriously as the technical round.

How long does an HR interview last?

Typically 15–30 minutes for freshers. Some campus drives have a shorter combined technical and HR round.

What should I wear for an HR interview?

Formal or smart-casual clothes that are clean and ironed: a shirt and trousers, or a kurta or formal top. For video interviews, the top half matters most, and a plain background helps.
