Resume format for freshers (with a sample resume and examples)

5 min readBy the HireSol Careers TeamUpdated

Quick answer

The best resume format for freshers is a one-page, reverse-chronological resume with these sections in order: contact details, a 2-line summary, skills, projects, internships or experience, education, and certifications or achievements. Use a simple single-column layout, start each bullet with an action verb, add numbers wherever you can, and match the skills to the words used in the job listing.

A recruiter spends a few seconds on a fresher resume before deciding "shortlist" or "skip". Many companies also run resumes through an ATS (applicant tracking system) that looks for the skills in the job listing. A good fresher resume is built for both: easy for a person to skim and easy for software to read.

The best resume format for freshers

Use a one-page, single-column, reverse-chronological format (newest first). Avoid two-column designs, tables for layout, photos, graphics and icons: they look nice but often break ATS parsing.

Sections, in this order:

  1. Contact details
  2. Summary (2 lines)
  3. Skills
  4. Projects
  5. Internships / experience (move above projects if you have a relevant internship)
  6. Education
  7. Certifications and achievements

Section by section

1. Contact details

Full name (large), phone number, a professional email (firstname.lastname@gmail.com, not coolboy99@), city, and links to LinkedIn and GitHub or a portfolio. You don't need your full address, date of birth, father's name, religion or a photo.

2. Summary

Two lines that say who you are, what role you want and your strongest proof:

  • Weak: "Hardworking and passionate fresher seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation."
  • Strong: "Computer science graduate (2026) targeting frontend developer roles. Built and deployed 3 React apps, including a job tracker used by 50+ students."

3. Skills

List skills the job actually asks for, grouped:

  • Languages / tools: JavaScript, React, Node.js, SQL, Git
  • Soft skills: only if you can back them up elsewhere on the resume

Don't rate yourself with stars or percentages ("Java 80%"). It means nothing to a recruiter.

4. Projects

For freshers this is the most important section. For each project: name, tech or tools used, a link, and 2–3 bullets on what you built and what it achieved.

5. Internships and experience

Company, role, dates and 2–3 bullets each. College roles count too: placement coordinator, fest sponsorship lead, club head, freelance work, teaching or tuition.

6. Education

Degree, college, year of graduation and CGPA or percentage (include it if it's above 60% or the company asks for it). Class 12 and 10 in one line each, or skip them if space is tight and the listing doesn't ask.

7. Certifications and achievements

Only relevant ones: hackathon results, a verifiable course certificate, a published article, a competition rank.

How to write bullet points that get shortlisted

Use this pattern: Action verb + what you did + result (with a number).

Instead ofWrite
Worked on a website for a college festBuilt the college fest website in React; handled 3,000+ visits and 400 registrations
Responsible for social mediaGrew the club's Instagram from 300 to 1,200 followers in 4 months with weekly reels
Did a sales internshipMade 40+ calls a day and closed 18 paid sign-ups in 6 weeks, 120% of target
Made a data analysis projectAnalysed 50,000 rows of Zomato data in Python to find the 5 factors that predict ratings

Good action verbs: built, designed, launched, analysed, automated, led, increased, reduced, organised, wrote, sold, trained.

ATS tips for freshers

  • Use standard headings: "Skills", "Projects", "Experience", "Education".
  • Copy the exact skill words from the listing where they're true ("React.js" vs "React", "MS Excel" vs "Excel").
  • Avoid text inside images, headers and footers, and fancy fonts.
  • Tailor the summary and skills for each role type. It takes 5 minutes and noticeably raises your shortlist rate.

Mistakes that get fresher resumes rejected

  • Two or more pages with filler ("hobbies: listening to music").
  • Spelling mistakes and inconsistent formatting.
  • An objective statement that says nothing.
  • Listing skills you can't answer one question about in an interview.
  • Missing links: a developer resume without GitHub or a live project is a red flag.

Frequently asked questions

Should a fresher resume be one page?

Yes. A fresher has enough relevant material for one page. Recruiters skim, and a focused one-page resume is easier to shortlist than two pages of filler.

Should I add a photo to my resume?

No, unless the employer specifically asks for one. Photos take space, can confuse ATS software and aren't needed for most jobs in India.

What is the difference between a CV and a resume?

In India the words are often used for the same thing. Strictly, a resume is a short (1–2 page) summary tailored to a job, while a CV is a longer, complete academic record. Freshers applying to jobs need a resume.

Should I write a career objective?

Replace the generic objective with a 2-line summary that names your target role and your strongest proof, such as a project or internship result.

Which file format should I use?

Send a PDF unless the employer asks for Word. A PDF keeps your formatting the same on every device.
