How to get a job as a fresher in India (2026 guide)

6 min readBy the HireSol Careers TeamUpdated

Quick answer

To get a job as a fresher in India, choose one target role, build 2–3 small projects or work samples that prove you can do it, write a one-page resume around those, and apply every day to fresher-friendly openings, campus drives and skill-based hiring platforms. Follow up, practise interviews out loud, and treat every rejection as feedback on what to improve.

Getting your first job is the hardest one. You have no experience to show, every listing seems to ask for "1–2 years", and hundreds of people apply to the same opening. The good news: companies hire freshers every month, and the ones who get picked are rarely the ones with the best marks. They're the ones who can show they can do the work.

Here is the plan that works, in order.

1. Pick one role, not ten

Applying to "any job" makes your resume vague and your interviews weak. Pick one target role for the next 60 days (you can change later):

If you studied / enjoyFresher roles to target
Computer science, codingSoftware developer, web developer, QA / test engineer, support engineer
Commerce, financeAccounts executive, financial analyst trainee, banking associate
Any degree, good with peopleSales executive, business development, customer success, HR recruiter
Writing, social mediaContent writer, social media executive, digital marketing executive
Numbers, ExcelData analyst, MIS executive, operations analyst
DesignUI/UX designer, graphic designer

Read 10 real listings for that role and write down the skills that keep coming up. That list is your study plan.

2. Build proof, not just certificates

Recruiters see the same online certificates on every resume. What stands out is work they can look at:

  • Developers: 2–3 deployed projects on GitHub with a live link (a CRUD app, an API, a clone of a real product's core feature).
  • Data analysts: a dashboard or analysis on a public dataset, with the questions you answered and what you found.
  • Marketing / content: a blog, 5 sample posts, or a small campaign you ran for a local business or college event.
  • Sales / BD: a short pitch video, a sales plan for a real product, or results from a college fest sponsorship drive.

Tip: One finished project beats five half-done ones. Write a short README for each: the problem, what you built, and what you'd improve.

If you want structured practice, HireSol's free learning courses and interview question sets cover most fresher roles.

3. Write a one-page resume around that proof

Your resume has one job: get you shortlisted in about 7 seconds of skimming. For a fresher that means:

  • One page. Name, phone, email, LinkedIn, GitHub or portfolio at the top.
  • Projects above education if they're relevant to the role.
  • Bullet points that start with a verb and end with a result: "Built a React expense tracker used by 40 classmates" beats "Worked on a React project".
  • Skills that match the listing, in the same words the listing uses (this helps with ATS filters).

4. Apply where freshers actually get hired

Spread your applications across these channels instead of only one job portal:

  1. Campus placements if your college has them. Prepare early: see our campus placement preparation guide.
  2. Off-campus drives by IT services companies and large employers. They usually open on the company's careers page.
  3. Startups. They hire freshers for real responsibility and care more about skills than college names. Check their careers pages and LinkedIn posts by founders.
  4. Skill-based hiring platforms like HireSol, where you apply free, see every hiring round up front, and do a short real task instead of being filtered out by a keyword scanner.
  5. Referrals. Message seniors from your college who work at companies you like. A short, specific message ("I'm applying for X, could you refer me? Here's my resume and a project I built") gets far more replies than "please help".

Aim for 5–10 thoughtful applications a day, not 100 copy-paste ones. Keep a simple sheet: company, role, date applied, status, follow-up date.

5. Use internships as a stepping stone

If full-time offers aren't coming yet, a 2–6 month internship gives you real experience, a reference, and often a pre-placement offer (PPO). Many companies convert their best interns. See how to get an internship in India and the open internships on HireSol.

6. Prepare for the interview like an exam

Most fresher interviews have the same parts: an aptitude or skill test, a technical or role round, and an HR round. Prepare each one:

  • Aptitude: practise 20–30 minutes daily. Our free aptitude and reasoning course covers the common topics.
  • Technical / role round: be able to explain every line of your projects. Expect "why did you choose this?" and "what would you change?"
  • HR round: prepare your answer to Tell me about yourself and the common HR questions. Practise them out loud, not just in your head.

Tip: Record yourself answering three questions on your phone. Watching it once will improve you more than reading ten articles.

7. Understand the offer before you accept

When an offer comes, check the in-hand salary, not just the CTC, and read the bond, notice period and joining date carefully. Our guide on CTC vs in-hand salary shows how to calculate what you'll actually receive.

A 30-day plan

WeekFocus
1Pick the role, list the skills, start one project
2Finish the project, write the resume, update LinkedIn
3Apply 5–10 a day, message 10 seniors for referrals, daily aptitude practice
4Mock interviews, follow up on every application, start project two

Repeat weeks 3–4 until you're hired. Most freshers who follow a plan like this get interview calls within a few weeks; the ones who don't are usually applying everywhere with a generic resume.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take a fresher to get a job in India?

It varies by role, city and how actively you apply, but with a focused role, a clear resume and daily applications, many freshers start getting interview calls within 3–6 weeks. Campus placements follow the college's schedule, usually in the final year.

Can I get a job without experience?

Yes. Fresher roles are designed for people without full-time experience. Replace experience with proof: projects, internships, college work, freelance work or a task you complete during the hiring process.

Which job is best for freshers in India?

The best job is one that matches your skills and teaches you a lot in the first year. Software development, sales and business development, digital marketing, data analysis, customer success and finance roles all hire large numbers of freshers.

Do companies care about college marks?

Some large companies set a minimum percentage (often 60% or a CGPA cut-off) for campus drives. Most startups and skill-based hiring platforms care more about what you can do than your marks.

Is it okay to apply to jobs that ask for 1–2 years of experience?

Yes, if you match most of the other requirements and have relevant projects or internships. Listings describe the ideal candidate; companies regularly hire strong freshers for these roles.
