How to get an internship in India as a college student (even with no experience)
5 min readBy the HireSol Careers TeamUpdated
Quick answer
To get an internship in India, pick one field, build one small project or work sample in it, make a one-page resume, and apply to 5–10 internships a day on internship platforms, company careers pages and startup founders' LinkedIn posts. Send short, personalised messages that link to your work, follow up after 5–7 days, and say yes to small first internships: they make the next one much easier to get.
An internship is the fastest way to get real experience, a reference, and very often a full-time offer. The catch is that the first internship is the hardest to get, because everyone else is also applying with no experience. Here's how to stand out.
When to start
- Summer internships (May–July): start applying in January–March.
- Winter internships (December–January): apply from October.
- Part-time or remote internships during the semester: any time; startups hire for these all year.
- Final-year internships (often 6 months): apply 2–3 months before your last semester. These convert into full-time offers most often.
Step 1: Choose a field and build one proof of skill
Recruiters can't judge "interested in marketing". They can judge a sample. Make one small thing in your field before applying:
| Field | A proof you can build in 1–2 weeks |
|---|---|
| Web / app development | A deployed project with a GitHub link |
| Data analysis | A dashboard or notebook on a public dataset |
| Content writing | 3 sample articles on a blog or Medium |
| Social media marketing | A content calendar and 5 sample posts for a real brand |
| Graphic / UI design | 3–5 designs on Behance or a portfolio |
| Sales / business development | A 1-page sales plan for a startup's product |
| HR / recruitment | A sourcing plan and sample job description for a real role |

Step 2: Make a one-page internship resume
Put your proof of skill at the top, under a 2-line summary, then education, college roles (clubs, fests, volunteering) and skills. Our resume format for freshers works for internships too.
Step 3: Apply in the right places
- Internship and job platforms like HireSol internships, where many listings show the stipend, duration and every hiring round up front.
- Company careers pages of companies you'd like to work for.
- Startup founders and team leads on LinkedIn. Many startups post "we're hiring interns" on LinkedIn before listing anywhere else.
- Your college's placement or internship cell, and professors who run research projects.
- Seniors and alumni working at companies you like, for referrals.
Aim for 5–10 tailored applications a day and track them in a sheet.
Step 4: Send messages that get replies
A short, specific message beats a long generic one. Example for a startup:
Subject: Marketing intern application – sample campaign for [Startup]
Hi [Name],
I'm a 2nd-year BBA student at [College]. I've been following [Startup]'s Instagram and
put together 5 sample reels ideas and a 2-week content calendar for your new launch:

I'd love to help as a marketing intern (remote or in Pune, 3 months, available from June).
Resume: [link]
Thanks,
[Your name] · [Phone]Why it works: it shows you researched them, it gives them something useful, and it's easy to say yes to.
Tip: Follow up once after 5–7 days with a single line ("Just checking if you had a chance to look at the sample"). Many replies come after the follow-up.
Step 5: Ace the internship interview or task
Internship interviews are lighter than job interviews, but expect:
- "Tell me about yourself": see how to answer it.
- Questions about your sample or project: why you made the choices you did.
- A short assignment. On HireSol, many internships include a short task, with the time it should take shown up front, so companies judge your work, not just your resume.
Paid vs unpaid internships
Prefer paid internships. A stipend shows the company values your work, and paid internships usually come with real responsibility. A short unpaid internship can be worth it only if the learning, mentor or brand is genuinely strong, the hours are reasonable, and you get a certificate and a reference. Avoid any internship that asks you to pay a fee.
Turn the internship into a full-time offer (PPO)
Many companies give pre-placement offers (PPOs) to their best interns. To earn one:
- Ask your manager in week one what a great internship looks like for them.
- Send a short weekly update: what you did, what you learned, what's next.
- Finish things. One shipped, useful project matters more than five half-done tasks.
- In your last two weeks, ask directly whether there's a chance of a full-time role.
Even without a PPO, ask for a LinkedIn recommendation and a reference before you leave.
Frequently asked questions
Can a first-year student get an internship?
Yes. Startups, NGOs, research projects and small businesses regularly take first- and second-year students, especially for remote, part-time or short internships in marketing, content, design, sales and development.
How do I get an internship with no experience?
Replace experience with proof: one small project, sample or plan in your field, linked in your resume and in every application message.
What is a good stipend for an internship in India?
It varies widely by field, city and company. Many startups pay a few thousand to ₹15,000 a month, while software development internships at funded startups and larger companies often pay more. Compare stipends on listings for your role before applying.
Are work-from-home internships worth it?
Yes, if the work is real and you have a mentor who reviews it. Remote internships let you work with companies in other cities while studying. Check that the company is genuine and doesn't charge a fee.
How long should an internship be?
Two to three months is the most common length for summer internships. Six-month internships, usually in the final year, give the deepest experience and convert into full-time offers most often.
